We have a direct impact on the environment that we leave for our children and theirs -- on the land that we farm, the Bay upon which we rely, and the air that we breathe. When people choose to ride public transportation, that action translates into fewer cars on the road, fewer emissions in the air, and a healthier environment. That is why this Administration is committed to addressing the growing demand for public transit, and is dedicated to making this highly cost-effective and environmentally-conscious mode of transportation as readily available as possible to the people of Maryland.

More and more people are choosing public transportation as the most viable, energy efficient way to get around. As federal recovery dollars become more available to improve Local Bus and commuter rail services, Maryland’s Department of Transportation will be better able to address today’s challenges and meet tomorrow’s needs. Currently there are over 100 hybrid buses on the streets of Baltimore and more on order, bringing us closer to our goal of operating only hybrids by 2014. Making the “green” choice and supporting public transportation is one of the fastest ways that we can make an immediate positive impact on our environment.

Every day over 350,000 people use MTA bus and rail services. By using public transit, you’re already helping to lessen your eco-footprint by reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. The MTA constantly looks for new ways to utilize the latest green technologies as well as creative ways to streamline our routes. We have reduced the number of buses on our less frequently used routes and added service on some of our busiest routes, a simple way to reduce the amount of energy used per passenger. I thank you for riding MTA and supporting our green initiatives, and hope to see you onboard!
